West Sumatra is one of Indonesia’s most rewarding provinces for waterfall lovers.

Beyond its famous lakes, beaches, food, and Minangkabau culture, the province is filled with waterfalls hidden in forests, valleys, villages, plantations, and mountain slopes.

This guide highlights 15 kabupaten and kota in West Sumatra that have waterfalls within their own administrative borders.

Some are major tourism icons, while others remain quiet local treasures waiting to be explored.

Kota Bukittinggi, Kota Payakumbuh, Kota Pariaman, and Kota Solok are not included because there are no well-known waterfalls located within their city boundaries.

1. Air Terjun Kulukubuk, Kabupaten Kepulauan Mentawai

Most travellers know Mentawai for its world-class surfing, beautiful beaches, and unique island culture, but the archipelago also has impressive inland waterfalls.

One of the best examples is Air Terjun Kulukubuk, located in Desa Madobag, Kecamatan Siberut Selatan, Kabupaten Kepulauan Mentawai.

Hidden in the rainforest interior of Siberut, Kulukubuk offers clear, refreshing water and a peaceful natural setting surrounded by tropical vegetation.

The pool is suitable for swimming, but visitors should be careful because some sections are deep.

Jumping from the riverbanks is not recommended, as the area can be slippery and may cause injury.

Access to the waterfall can be challenging. The road and walking path are in poor condition in some sections, and many of the wooden boards along the footpath may be missing or damaged.

Visitors should wear proper footwear, take extra care when walking, and consider going with a local guide.

The journey to Kulukubuk is part of the experience.

Reaching the waterfall involves travelling through forest paths and village areas, making it ideal for travellers who want to see a more adventurous side of Mentawai beyond the coastline.

A visit to Kulukubuk can also be combined with cultural experiences in Madobag, where travellers can learn about local traditions, uma houses, and daily life in the Mentawai interior.

2. Air Terjun Bayang Sani, Kabupaten Pesisir Selatan

Air Terjun Bayang Sani is one of the most recognised waterfalls in Kabupaten Pesisir Selatan.

It is located in Nagari Koto Berapak, Kecamatan Bayang, around 20 kilometres from Painan and around 60 kilometres from Padang.

The drive from Padang to Pesisir Selatan is generally smooth and scenic, with beautiful coastal and hillside views along the way.

However, the road becomes a little bumpy as you get closer to the waterfall, so it is best to drive carefully, especially after rain.

The waterfall itself is beautiful, with a wide flow, natural pools, and a refreshing atmosphere.

Visitors can swim here, and local vendors sometimes rent out swim rings for those who want extra support in the water.

The large rocks around the waterfall can be slippery, so wear comfortable footwear with good grip.

In some areas, walking barefoot may feel safer, but always move slowly and carefully.

If you are lucky, you may also find local food stalls selling fresh durian, which makes the trip even more memorable.

Bayang Sani is known for its impressive size, multi-level formation, and peaceful natural setting. The waterfall also has a historical connection.

According to local stories, it was once used as a bathing place during the Dutch colonial period, adding an interesting cultural layer to its natural beauty.

3. Air Terjun Ulu Suliti, Kabupaten Solok

Air Terjun Ulu Suliti is located in Nagari Pakan Rabaa Utara, Kecamatan Koto Parik Gadang Diateh.

This waterfall is tall, dramatic, and still feels incredibly pristine, making it one of the most authentic natural attractions in the area.

According to local information, Ulu Suliti is considered one of the tallest waterfalls in the region, with an estimated height of around 45 metres.

It has a strong water flow, especially after rain, and is surrounded by high green cliffs that create a powerful and refreshing landscape.

The water is crystal clear, the air is cool, and the setting feels peaceful and untouched.

In the morning, the area is often covered in mist, giving the waterfall an even fresher and more magical atmosphere.

Much of the surrounding rock and forest floor can be covered with moss, so visitors should be careful when exploring the site.

Reaching the waterfall can be challenging. The path is not yet well developed, and some parts may be difficult to walk through, especially in wet conditions.

Hopefully, the relevant authorities will give more attention to improving access in the future, because Ulu Suliti has excellent tourism potential and could bring real benefits to the local community.

The waterfall also has a natural pond and river below it, although the depth is not clearly known.

4. Geoheritage Air Terjun Lubuk Pandakian, Kabupaten Sijunjung

Geoheritage Air Terjun Lubuk Pandakian is one of the most beautiful natural attractions in Sumpur Kudus, Kabupaten Sijunjung.

It was once considered a hidden paradise, although today more visitors have started to discover its beauty. Even so, the waterfall still feels natural, peaceful, and well preserved.

The waterfall is truly stunning, with clean, refreshing water flowing through a lush forest landscape.

Its beauty is closely connected to the surrounding forest, which has been protected through the efforts of the local village community and LPHN Sumpur Kudus.

Their work in maintaining the forest has helped keep the water clear and the environment around the waterfall healthy.

Access to Lubuk Pandakian is relatively easy compared to many other forest waterfalls in West Sumatra.

From the parking area, visitors only need to walk around 20 to 30 minutes along a gentle trail.

The route is suitable for most visitors, although comfortable footwear is still recommended, especially after rain.

Another unique feature is the swimming pool near the parking area, which is fed by water from the waterfall.

This makes the area suitable not only for trekking and sightseeing, but also for visitors who want to enjoy a refreshing swim before or after visiting the main waterfall.

5. Air Terjun Proklamator, Kabupaten Tanah Datar

Air Terjun Proklamator is a hidden waterfall in the Lembah Anai area, located in Nagari Singgalang, Kecamatan Sepuluh Koto, Kabupaten Tanah Datar.

It sits near the main Padang to Bukittinggi road, not far from the iconic Lembah Anai Waterfall, making it a great stop for travellers heading from Padang toward Bukittinggi.

Although it is close to one of West Sumatra’s busiest travel routes, the waterfall feels much more secluded.

Visitors need to hike for around 20 to 25 minutes through tropical rainforest before reaching the falls.

The trail can be challenging, but parts of the route are supported by wooden tracks and railings, which help make the climb easier.

At the end of the walk, visitors are rewarded with a beautiful waterfall and clear blue water surrounded by lush forest scenery.

The atmosphere is fresh, quiet, and refreshing, making Air Terjun Proklamator a good choice for travellers who want something more adventurous than the roadside Lembah Anai Waterfall.

Swimming is possible, but visitors should be careful because the rocks around the waterfall can be slippery.

6. Air Terjun Nyarai, Kabupaten Padang Pariaman

Air Terjun Nyarai is the signature attraction of Desa Wisata Nyarai in Nagari Salibutan, Lubuk Alung, Kabupaten Padang Pariaman.

The waterfall is located in the Gamaran forest area and is famous for its natural pool, known locally as a lubuk.

The pool was formed by geological processes, where water movement gradually shaped the rock basin over time.

Nyarai is popular for trekking, swimming, nature photography, and community-based tourism.

It is one of the best waterfall trips near Padang for travellers who want a forest adventure.

7. Air Terjun Langkuik Tinggi, Kabupaten Agam

Air Terjun Langkuik Tinggi is a rewarding jungle waterfall hike in Kabupaten Agam, offering three beautiful waterfalls in one trip.

The trek takes around 1.5 hours one way and can be challenging, with muddy slopes, river crossings, slippery rocks, and some rope-assisted sections.

Hiring a local guide is strongly recommended, with guide fees commonly around Rp150,000, though prices may vary.

Wear proper trekking shoes, water shoes, or non-slip sandals. Avoid flip-flops, as the trail can be slippery and wet.

Bring a dry bag for your phone and valuables, and use a trekking pole or walking stick if you have one.

The hike can be tiring, but the reward is unforgettable: powerful waterfalls, lush jungle, clear water, and scenery that feels almost like something from a movie.

Harau Valley is known for its towering cliffs, rice fields, and waterfalls flowing down from the surrounding highlands.

Several waterfalls are found in the Harau area, including Sarasah Bunta, Akar Barayun, Sarasah Luluh, and Sarasah Murai.

Sarasah Bunta is one of the best choices for visitors who want dramatic scenery, because the waterfall is framed by the steep cliffs that make Harau one of West Sumatra’s most photogenic landscapes.

9. Air Terjun Coracai, Kabupaten Pasaman

Air Terjun Coracai, also commonly written as Air Terjun Cirocai or Air Terjun Ciracai, is a hidden natural attraction in Nagari Sundata, Kecamatan Lubuk Sikaping, Kabupaten Pasaman.

Located around the Jorong Sundata / Sundata Selatan area near Sungai Pandahan, this waterfall is often described as one of Pasaman’s hidden paradises.

It offers a beautiful, exotic, and still largely untouched natural setting.

The main attraction of Coracai is its multi-tiered waterfall formation, with water flowing down several levels of natural rock.

Each section has its own character, creating a dramatic landscape surrounded by forest, boulders, and fresh mountain air.

Because the area has not yet been heavily developed as a tourist destination, access to the waterfall still feels adventurous.

Visitors usually need to trek through natural forest terrain to reach the main waterfall area.

The route can be challenging, especially after rain, so proper footwear and extra caution are recommended.

For travellers who enjoy quiet places, raw nature, and off-the-beaten-path destinations, Air Terjun Coracai is one of the most rewarding waterfalls to explore in Kabupaten Pasaman.

It has strong tourism potential, especially for eco-tourism and nature-based adventure trips.

10. Air Terjun Tansi Ampek, Kabupaten Solok Selatan

Air Terjun Tansi Ampek is located in Lubuk Gadang Selatan, Kecamatan Sangir, Kabupaten Solok Selatan, near the Mitra Kerinci tea plantation at the foot of Mount Kerinci.

The waterfall sits in a jungle area on the edge of the tea plantation, making the hike especially scenic.

The route takes visitors through green tea fields before entering a quieter forest setting.

Tansi Ampek is often described as having two levels, with one section around 15 metres high and another around 10 metres high.

The waterfall feels peaceful and hidden, perfect for travellers who enjoy nature away from busy tourist spots.

Getting there requires some effort. The road through the plantation is rocky and not suitable for regular cars.

Motorbikes can pass, but only for confident riders. Most visitors will need to continue on foot, with the full hike around 5 kilometres return.

There are no clear signboards, so use Google Maps and ask local farmers for directions if needed. Wear proper walking shoes, bring water, and be prepared for uneven or muddy sections.

For waterfall lovers, Air Terjun Tansi Ampek is one of Solok Selatan’s most memorable hikes, combining tea plantation views, jungle atmosphere, and a quiet waterfall setting.

Air Terjun Incasi Raya is one of the tallest and most well-known waterfalls in Kabupaten Dharmasraya.

It is located in Sinamar, Kecamatan Asam Jujuhan, near the border with the Sitiung 4 area.

What makes this waterfall unique is its setting in the middle of an oil palm plantation.

Despite its plantation surroundings, the waterfall still feels calm and refreshing, with clear water, shaded areas, and a peaceful natural atmosphere.

One of the best times to visit is in the morning, especially between 8 AM and 10 AM.

If the weather is right, visitors may see a small rainbow forming through the waterfall mist, adding to the beauty of the place.

Access to Air Terjun Incasi Raya is relatively easy compared to many other waterfalls in West Sumatra.

The road is generally in good condition and can be reached by four-wheel vehicles, making it a suitable option for visitors who want a beautiful waterfall without a difficult trek.

Lubuk Hitam Waterfall

13. Air Terjun Lubuk Hitam, Kota Padang

Air Terjun Lubuk Hitam, also known as the Three-Tier Waterfall, is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Kota Padang.

It is located around 25 kilometres south of Padang City, in Teluk Kabung Utara, Bungus, and is known for its three levels of water cascading down rocky jungle walls.

The drive from Padang takes around one hour via Jalan Raya Padang-Painan, passing Teluk Bayur Harbour and scenic coastal views along the way.

The road is narrow in some sections and has potholes, but the ocean scenery makes the journey enjoyable.

Visitors can also take a Trans Padang bus to Bungus, then continue by local ojek to the entrance.

From the parking area, the hike to the waterfall takes around 40 minutes.

The trail starts fairly easy but becomes steep, slippery, and challenging, especially when heading to the second and third levels.

A local guide is required, as the route passes through jungle terrain and visitors can get lost. Guides also help track visitors and make sure everyone returns safely before closing time.

The waterfall is suitable for travellers looking for a real jungle adventure near Padang.

The first level is easier to reach, while the upper tiers require more effort and caution.

Wear proper trekking shoes or non-slip sandals, bring enough water, and avoid visiting during heavy rain because the trail can become dangerous.

14. Air Terjun Sungai Bikan, Kota Sawahlunto

Air Terjun Sungai Bikan is located in Desa Rantih, Kecamatan Talawi, Kota Sawahlunto, inside the Kawasan Wisata Alam Rantih.

It is one of Sawahlunto’s nature-based attractions, offering a refreshing contrast to the city’s better-known mining heritage and old town history.

The walk to the waterfall is one of the highlights. The trail follows a clear mountain stream through lush jungle, rocky walls, and dense greenery.

At around 700 metres, the route feels like a natural botanical garden, with tropical plants, butterflies, lizards, and, if you are lucky, even monkeys along the way.

The trail starts just behind the right side of the Rantih village administration building.

The first section can be accessed by scooter, although the path is narrow, so it is better to be cautious if other riders are passing through.

Walking is still the best way to enjoy the scenery properly.

Air Terjun Sungai Bikan is ideal for travellers who enjoy light trekking, jungle atmosphere, clean streams, and quiet natural surroundings.

It is a beautiful stop for anyone visiting Sawahlunto who wants to experience the city beyond its museums and heritage sites.

15. Air Terjun Tujuh Tingkat, Kota Padang Panjang

Air Terjun Tujuh Tingkat is one of the waterfall attractions in Kota Padang Panjang, located around Silaing Bawah, Padang Panjang Barat.

As the name suggests, the waterfall is known for its seven-tiered formation.

It is often recommended as one of Padang Panjang’s popular nature attractions, alongside Lubuk Mata Kucing and other local destinations.

Because Padang Panjang is compact and cool, Air Terjun Tujuh Tingkat is a good option for travellers who want a short nature escape inside the city boundary.

West Sumatra’s waterfalls are spread across islands, forests, valleys, highlands, villages, plantations, and old mining landscapes.

Some are relatively easy to reach, while others reward visitors with trekking, rainforest scenery, and a deeper connection to local communities.

From Mentawai to Pasaman Barat, and from Padang to Sawahlunto, these 15 waterfalls show that West Sumatra is not only a land of lakes, beaches, food, and culture.

It is also one of Indonesia’s most exciting waterfall provinces.
