However, there is more to discover in the interior of the island, such as its stunning waterfalls. From the tallest Kulukubuk waterfall to the remote Bat Soumang waterfall, each of these natural wonders has its own unique charm. The following are our top 5 waterfall recommendations in Mentawai Island.
1. Bat Soumang Waterfall
The remote location of Air Terjun Bat Soumang, an enchanting waterfall attraction, adds to its allure despite its natural state and lack of facilities. For adventurous souls, visiting the site surrounded by lush forests of rattan and large trees is a must-try.
Air Terjun Bat Soumang’s rushing waters are also ideal for whitewater rafting at Dusun Bulasat. For those hesitant to brave the waterfall’s rapids, they can still enjoy the stunning scenery with the cascading water and cool current. Although no facilities are available at Air Terjun Bat Soumang, visitors can rent a local guide to accompany and protect them from danger. Mentawai locals are accustomed to the waterfall’s ferocity.
2. Kulukubuk Waterfall
Located in Dusun Kulukubuk, Madobag Village, South Siberut, Mentawai Islands, West Sumatra, Kulukubuk Waterfall is the highest waterfall in the Mentawai Islands, measuring almost 30 meters in height. After a one-hour drive from Muara Siberut, visitors must hike for about 30 minutes to reach the waterfall, following the sturdy concrete bridge structure that serves as a guide.
However, it is not recommended to wear sandals or non-anti-slip shoes when crossing the bridge. Due to the high humidity in the waterfall area, the wooden floor of the government-built bridge deteriorates quickly.
3. Singunung Waterfall
Singunung waterfall in Mentawai is a three-tiered waterfall located in Malancan village, North Siberut district, Mentawai Islands, West Sumatra, within the concession of a logging company. The locals call it Singunung. To get to the waterfall location, it takes a 2.5-hour journey from the district capital, Sikabaluan, North Siberut.
Starting from Sikabaluan village, ride a two-wheeled vehicle to Malancan village, a distance of approximately 30 minutes. Along the way, we are treated to a serene rural atmosphere with dense trees. The air is very fresh. Upon entering Malancan village, we passed a wooden gate with the inscription, “Welcome to Ukkra hamlet.” The environment is clean, with neatly arranged traditional Mentawai houses, even to Sibeuoncun hamlet. Each house is adorned with a bamboo fence garden.
