Intoroduction

The traditional Indonesian beverage Teh Talua, often referred to as Teh Telur, comes from West Sumatra. Black tea that has been brewed, sugar, and egg yolks from either chicken or duck eggs are used to make it. After adding the hot tea and stirring in the lime juice for taste, the egg yolks and sugar are whisked together to create a foamy batter. This beverage is regarded as nutritious and is said to increase stamina.

History

The history of Teh Talua dates back to when it was consumed by royalty and affluent merchants. It was often served in tea houses, where patrons would engage in conversation over a cup of Teh Talua. Today, this beverage has become a hallmark drink of Minang and can be found throughout Indonesia, particularly in West Sumatra.

What to look for a perfect Teh Talua

The Minangkabau people determine the quality of the tea based on the number of visible layers within the glass. A high-quality Teh Talua should have three to five layers, with the first layer being referred to as “buriah”, the second layer a light brown hue, and the final layer white. Furthermore, a well-made Teh Talua should have an aluminum spoon standing upright in the glass, indicating its unique and satisfying flavor.

Teh Talua is more than just a beverage, it is a drink steeped in cultural tradition and history in West Sumatra, Indonesia. The intricate preparation process and its cultural significance make it a must-try for anyone visiting the region.
