Goedang Ransum Sawahlunto, located in the city of Sawahlunto in West Sumatra, Indonesia, is a cultural heritage site with a rich history dating back to the colonial era. This historic site tells the story of the local mining industry, which was once a major source of wealth for the region. History

The museum complex is comprised of former communal kitchens, warehouses, hospitals, and other buildings, providing a comprehensive look into the daily life of the coal mine workers. The main building, which once served as the communal kitchen, demonstrates how 3,900 kilograms of rice were cooked daily for the workers.

The Preservation of Goedang Ransum Sawahlunto

After many years of neglect, Goedang Ransum Sawahlunto was finally restored and preserved in the early 2000s. The restoration process was extensive and included repairing the building’s structure, restoring its original architecture, and adding new facilities such as a museum and a library. Today, Goedang Ransum Sawahlunto is open to the public and is a popular tourist destination for those interested in the history of the mining industry and the local culture.

Activity

Visitors can explore the large warehouses for raw materials and rice storage and admire the 1894 German-made combustion kilns. Climbing to the top of the smokestack tower provides a panoramic view of the complex.

In addition to the communal kitchen, visitors can discover the ice factory, hospital, Ombilin coal mine cooperative office, rice mill, head of provisions’ house, employee housing, guard post, animal slaughterhouse, and head of the animal butcher’s residence. Each building holds its own unique story and provides a unique experience that will leave visitors with a deeper understanding and appreciation of the past.

How to Get There

Getting to the Goedang Ransum Museum is easy, as it is located around 94 kilometers or a two-hour drive from the city of Padang. For those who prefer public transportation, a bus from Padang takes approximately 2.5 hours. The museum is open every day from 9 AM to 4 PM, providing plenty of opportunity to learn about the history and culture of coal mining in Sawahlunto.

Admission Fee & Opening Hours

Admission to the museum is affordable, with tickets priced at IDR 4,000 for adults and IDR 2,000 for children. The museum is open for visits Tuesday to Friday from 07.30-16.30 WIB and on Saturday and Sunday from 09.00-16.00 WIB.
