Dreaming of retiring or living in West Sumatra? Whether you’re seeking tropical beaches, cultural richness, or a new business venture.

Obtaining a KITAS (Limited Stay Permit) is your first step to making West Sumatra your home.

In this guide, we’ll explain all KITAS options available for foreigners and help you understand the process, eligibility, and benefits.

Why Consider West Sumatra for Long-Term Living?

Indonesia is the world’s largest archipelago, home to over 17,000 islands, rich cultural diversity, and some of the most stunning natural landscapes in Southeast Asia.

Retirees, investors, and remote workers alike are attracted by:

  • Affordable living costs compared to Western countries
  • Tropical climate and diverse landscapes, from West Sumatra’s pristine beaches to towering mountains
  • Modern amenities in cities like Padang and Bukittinggi
  • Friendly locals
  • Opportunities to start a business or invest in a rapidly growing economy

Living in West Sumatra long-term requires proper visas and permits, and the KITAS is the most common route for foreigners who want to stay legally for more than 6 months.

What Is a KITAS?

A KITAS (Kartu Izin Tinggal Terbatas) is a Limited Stay Permit issued to foreigners who intend to live in Indonesia for a defined period.

Typically valid for one year at a time, a KITAS can be renewed annually. After five consecutive years, KITAS holders may be eligible to convert it to a KITAP (Permanent Stay Permit).

KITAS holders enjoy benefits such as:

  • Legally residing in Indonesia
  • Opening a local bank account and phone line
  • Registering for civil documents (SKTT, domicile letters)
  • Sponsoring family members (depending on the type of KITAS)

Types of KITAS

There are several KITAS options depending on your purpose for staying in West Sumatra.

Each has specific eligibility requirements, benefits, and limitations.

1. Retirement KITAS

Designed for foreigners aged 55 and above, the Retirement KITAS allows retirees to live in Indonesia without working.

Key Points:

  • Age: 55+
  • Minimum income: approx USD 1,500/month or sufficient savings
  • Lease agreement for a 12-month residence
  • Health insurance covering Indonesia

Benefits:

  • Stay legally anywhere in Indonesia one year at a time (renewable)
  • Sponsor your spouse (if over 55)
  • After 5 years, eligibility for KITAP

For a serene and culturally rich experience, West Sumatra is an ideal choice with its lakes, highlands, and Minangkabau heritage.

2. Second Home KITAS

The Second Home KITAS is designed for foreigners who wish to stay longer than a tourist visa allows but aren’t retirees. It typically comes with a 5- or 10-year term.

Requirements:

  • Proof of property ownership or long-term lease in Indonesia
  • Bank statement or proof of substantial funds (varies by region)
  • Health insurance

Benefits:

  • Live in Indonesia without the need for work
  • Renew for multiple years without leaving the country
  • Ideal for remote workers, digital nomads, or semi-retired individuals

3. Work KITAS

If you plan to work in West Sumatra, the Work KITAS is mandatory. This type is typically sponsored by an Indonesian company (PT or PT PMA for foreign investors).

Requirements:

Klook.com
  • Job offer from an Indonesian employer

  • Health insurance
  • Passport valid for at least 18 months

Benefits:

  • Legal employment in Indonesia
  • Sponsor for spouse and children (Family KITAS optional)
  • Access to local banking and insurance

Note: Working without a Work KITAS is illegal and can result in fines or deportation.

4. Investor KITAS / PT PMA

Foreigners who want to invest or establish a business in West Sumatra may apply for an Investor KITAS, usually connected to a PT PMA (foreign-owned company).

Requirements:
