If you’re looking for an authentic local experience in Padang, skip sleeping in on Sunday morning and head straight to Car Free Day (CFD).

Every Sunday from 6:00 AM to 10:00 AM, some of the city’s busiest streets are transformed into a vibrant public space filled with joggers, cyclists, families, food vendors, community groups, and small businesses.

More than just a road closure, Padang’s Car Free Day has become one of the most popular weekly events in West Sumatra.

Attracting thousands of residents and visitors who gather to exercise, socialise, and enjoy the city’s lively atmosphere.

Whether you’re a tourist or a local, here’s everything you need to know about experiencing Car Free Day in Padang.

What Is Car Free Day?

Car Free Day is a weekly event where selected roads are temporarily closed to motorised vehicles, allowing people to walk, run, cycle, and enjoy public spaces safely.

In Padang, the event is generally held along the Jalan Jenderal Sudirman and Jalan Rasuna Said corridor, stretching through the heart of GOR Agus Salim Stadion area.

During the event, the roads become a giant open-air recreation area where people of all ages come together to enjoy a healthier and more environmentally friendly lifestyle.

Visit Masjid Raya Sumatera Barat

One of Indonesia’s most spectacular mosques, Masjid Raya Sumatera Barat is easily accessible from the CFD area and is renowned for its distinctive Minangkabau-inspired architecture.

Experience Local Life

For many travellers, the highlight isn’t a specific attraction but simply seeing Padang residents enjoying their Sunday morning together.

It provides a genuine glimpse into modern Minangkabau culture.

Other Cities in West Sumatra With Car Free Day

Padang isn’t the only city embracing the Car Free Day movement. Several other cities across West Sumatra also host regular vehicle-free events.

Bukittinggi

Bukittinggi’s Car Free Day is typically held every Sunday morning around the Jam Gadang and Jalan Jenderal Sudirman area.

The event attracts residents and visitors looking to exercise while enjoying the city’s cool mountain climate.

Kota Solok

Car Free Day (CFD) in Kota Solok takes place every Sunday morning along Jalan Jenderal Sudirman up to Simpang Denpan Tugu Carano, running from 06.00 to 10.00 Western Indonesia Time.

Payakumbuh

The city of Payakumbuh has introduced Car Free Day at the scenic Batang Agam area.

The event is generally held on Saturday and Sunday mornings from 6:00 AM to 10:00 AM, providing a safe space for cycling, jogging, and family recreation.

Pariaman

Car Free Day in Kota Pariaman is routinely held every Sunday along the road between Simpang Lapai and Simpang LLAJ Gelombang.

The route is temporarily closed to motorised vehicles from 6:00 AM until 9:00 AM, allowing residents and visitors to enjoy walking, jogging, cycling, and recreational activities in a safer environment.

Pariaman’s CFD is particularly attractive because of the city’s relaxed atmosphere and proximity to some of West Sumatra’s most beautiful coastal areas.

Solok Selatan

Solok Selatan also hosts community-oriented Car Free Day programs that promote healthy living, exercise, and social interaction among residents.

Why You Should Visit

Many visitors see Padang merely as a gateway to destinations such as Bukittinggi, Mentawai Islands, or the highlands of West Sumatra.

However, spending a Sunday morning at Car Free Day reveals a different side of the city.

There are no entrance fees, no tourist traps, and no elaborate performances designed for visitors.

Instead, you’ll experience something far more authentic: local families exercising together, small businesses serving breakfast, community groups sharing their passions, and thousands of people enjoying public space as it was meant to be enjoyed.

If you’re visiting West Sumatra on a weekend, make sure to add Padang Car Free Day to your itinerary.

It may just become one of the most memorable experiences of your trip.
