Bukittinggi is known for its cool climate, rich Minangkabau culture, and important role in Indonesian history.
If you are looking for accommodation that offers more than just a place to sleep, Rumah Nizar is a unique stay worth considering.
Located on Jalan Panorama No. 15, Bukittinggi, Rumah Nizar offers guests a chance to experience life in a family home that has stood for almost a century.
Rather than being a typical hotel or commercial homestay, it is a carefully preserved family house that combines history, culture, and modern comfort.
A Family Home with Nearly a Century of History
The story of Rumah Nizar began in 1930 when the house was first rented by Achmad Sutan Mangkoeto.
In 1952, he purchased the property, laying the foundation for a family legacy that continues to this day.
Following the Minangkabau matrilineal tradition, the house was registered under the names of Achmad’s daughters, Anna Sarina and Anni Yuniar.
This reflects the unique Minangkabau custom where property and land are inherited through the female line.
Over the decades, the house witnessed many family milestones.
Some family members moved to Jakarta, while others continued living in Bukittinggi, ensuring that the home remained an important gathering place for future generations.
In 2006, the house was purchased by Hamdion Nizar Datuak Palindih, a descendant of the family.
Extensive renovations were carried out with great care to preserve the original character of the property, including its distinctive green and cream exterior colours.
Because most family members now live in Jakarta, the home was eventually opened to guests in 2019 and named Rumah Nizar in honour of Nizar Sutan Alamsjah.

A Home Connected to Indonesian History
One of the most remarkable aspects of Rumah Nizar is its connection to several important figures in Indonesia’s early history.
The family is closely related to Mr. Assaat Datuak Mudo, who served as the Acting President of Indonesia between 1949 and 1950.
Another prominent family member, dr. Abdul Halim, served as Indonesia’s fourth Prime Minister in 1950.
Guests staying at Rumah Nizar will discover historic family photographs displayed throughout the house, including images featuring President Sukarno, Mr. Assaat, and dr. Abdul Halim.
These photographs offer a fascinating glimpse into Indonesia’s nation-building years and give the property a character unlike any other accommodation in Bukittinggi.
Staying here feels less like checking into a hotel and more like stepping into a living piece of Indonesian history.

Traditional Minangkabau Architecture with Modern Comforts
What makes Rumah Nizar truly special is its blend of traditional Minangkabau architecture and modern interior design.
The house’s original wooden structure has been preserved, allowing guests to enjoy the charm of a traditional Minangkabau family home.
Inside, the rooms are thoughtfully decorated with furniture and decorative pieces collected from Jakarta, alongside handcrafted items made by artisans in Bukittinggi.
The owners have also kept many personal family belongings throughout the house.
Family photographs, historical memorabilia, paintings, and treasured keepsakes create a warm and authentic atmosphere that makes guests feel like they are visiting a family home rather than a commercial property.
Every corner of the house tells a story.

Most guests who stay at Rumah Nizar are families.

The owners created the homestay with a simple goal: to make guests feel as though they are staying in a real family home.
Inspired by their own travel experiences and Airbnb stays overseas, they wanted to share the warmth, comfort, and stories of a house that has been part of their family for generations.
Their hope is that every guest leaves not only with fond memories of Bukittinggi but also with a deeper appreciation of the family’s heritage and the history preserved within the house.
