Fruit picking is one of the most rewarding travel experiences in West Sumatra.

You get fresh air, enjoy fruit straight from the tree, and bring home something you picked yourself.

It is simple, relaxing, and perfect for all types of travellers.

In recent years, fruit-picking destinations in West Sumatra have become increasingly popular, especially in the cool highland areas and emerging agrotourism spots.

Many farms now welcome visitors to pick their own fruit, making it a great activity for families, couples, and road trip explorers.

Before planning your visit, keep one important rule in mind: always check the latest opening hours and harvest availability.

Fruit seasons can change quickly depending on weather and farm conditions.

Best Time for Fruit Picking in West Sumatra

West Sumatra has diverse microclimates, so fruit seasons vary depending on location.

However, you can use Indonesia’s general fruit calendar as a simple guide.

Strawberries in highland areas like Solok and Agam usually peak around February to March.

Melons are commonly harvested between July and August, while durian season typically falls between October and December.

For Jesigo oranges, one of the region’s specialties, the best time is from January to May.

That said, the most reliable way to plan your trip is to check directly with the farms or monitor their social media updates, as harvest timing can shift from year to year.

1. Strawberry Picking in Alahan Panjang (Solok)

Located near the scenic Danau Kembar area, Alahan Panjang is one of the best places for strawberry picking in West Sumatra.

The cool mountain climate makes it ideal for growing strawberries, and farms such as Dzjikho Kebun Strawberry Alahan Panjang have become popular with visitors.

Here, you can pick strawberries directly from the plants while enjoying fresh highland air and beautiful natural surroundings.

The best time to visit is in the morning, between 7:00 and 10:00 AM, when the fruit is still fresh and the weather is more comfortable.

Peak harvest typically occurs around February to March, although this can vary each year.

When picking strawberries, choose only fully red fruit and handle them gently to avoid bruising.

It is also a good idea to bring a container or use a basket provided by the farm.

2. Strawberry Picking in Nagari Balingka (Agam)

Nagari Balingka, located about 30 minutes from Bukittinggi, offers another excellent strawberry-picking experience.

This area is becoming increasingly popular as part of a highland road trip, thanks to its scenic views and cool climate.

Farms in Balingka such as Kebun Strawberry Upang is generally open daily, but fruit availability can fluctuate depending on the season and visitor demand.

For the best experience, it is recommended to arrive early in the day.

Because of the cooler temperatures, bringing a light jacket is a good idea.

As with any fruit-picking activity, only pick ripe strawberries and avoid damaging the plants.

3. Jesigo Orange Picking in Sarugo (Lima Puluh Kota)

Sarugo Village in Gunuang Omeh is known for its Jesigo oranges, a local variety of Jeruk Siam.

This is one of the most unique fruit-picking experiences in West Sumatra, offering visitors the chance to pick oranges directly from the tree and taste them on the spot.

The main harvest season runs from January to May, making this the best time to visit.

However, because the location is quite remote, it is important to plan ahead.

The journey can take around five to six hours by car from Minangkabau International Airport.

Before making the trip, confirm that the orchards are open and ready for visitors, you can contact them here @jesigo_jeruksiamgunungomeh.

When picking, follow local guidance and use tools provided to avoid damaging the trees.

4. Orange Picking in Sungai Tarab (Tanah Datar)

Edu-Wisata Kebun Jeruk Pak Pilan in Tanjuang Durian, Nagari Sungai Tarab offers a quieter, less crowded fruit-picking experience.

With an affordable entrance fee and an all-you-can-eat orange experience, it’s a friendly, relaxed stop for families and casual travelers alike.

The owner (Pak Pilan) is known for being welcoming, and the oranges are sweet enough to enjoy straight from the tree.

Parking is somewhat limited and the orchard is set a little away from the main road, so it’s best to come with a bit of extra time.

Entrance fee: IDR 10,000 per person, with oranges priced at IDR 20,000 per kilogram.

5. Hydroponic Melon Picking at Lumin’s Farm (Padang)

Located in the Lubuk Minturun area of Padang, Lumin’s Farm offers a modern twist on fruit picking with its hydroponic melon cultivation.

This is one of the city’s most talked-about agrotourism spots.

Melons here are grown in cycles of around 100 days, so the best time to visit is during the harvest phase.

Checking updates from the farm is essential before planning your trip.

Visitors can pick and purchase melons, with prices typically around Rp40,000 per kilogram during harvest periods.

Since the farm is inside a greenhouse, conditions can be hot and humid even when the weather outside is mild.

It is best to stay hydrated and follow staff instructions to protect the plants and facilities.

6. Kisai Agro, Payakumbuh (Multiple Fruit Experience)

Kisai Agro in Payakumbuh is a great destination for families and groups.

It offers a variety of fruits such as melon, guava, and grapes, along with greenhouse-grown crops.

In addition to fruit picking, the site also features other activities like camping and outdoor recreation, making it more than just a farm visit.

Because multiple crops are grown, the experience is not limited to a single season.

However, if you are specifically interested in melons, July to August is generally the best time.

Before visiting, check which fruits are currently available.

If you are traveling with children, make sure they stay within designated areas and avoid touching unripe fruit.

7. Kerta Wahana Sarilamak (KWS), Lima Puluh Kota

Located about 20 minutes from Payakumbuh, Kerta Wahana Sarilamak is a newer agrotourism destination that combines fruit picking with outdoor activities.

Fruit availability here depends entirely on the season, so timing your visit is important. Align your trip with general fruit harvest periods and confirm availability directly with the site.

Because this location also includes rivers and outdoor areas, wearing appropriate footwear is recommended, especially if you plan to explore beyond the orchards.

Fruit Picking Tips in West Sumatra

Planning ahead will make your fruit-picking experience smoother and more enjoyable.

  • Before you go, always check harvest availability and opening hours, especially for locations that require long travel times.
  • Wear comfortable shoes with good grip, particularly if you are visiting highland farms or orchards with uneven terrain.
  • Bringing a light jacket is also helpful for cooler areas like Alahan Panjang and Balingka.
  • It is a good idea to bring your own container to keep fruit safe during the journey home.
  • When picking fruit, choose only ripe produce and avoid pulling or damaging plants.
  • Washing fruit before eating is also recommended.

West Sumatra is not only known for its stunning landscapes and rich culinary culture.
