If you are looking for a cheap and fun activity in Padang, West Sumatra, try basianyuik at Lubuk Minturun.

This simple river activity costs just IDR 5,000 for a tube and lets you spend as much time as you like floating down the river.

In Minangkabau, basianyuik means going with the flow of the river.

The activity becomes even more fun when you use a large inner tube from a car or truck, locally known as a benen.

You sit on the tube, let the current carry you downstream, then walk back up the river and do it all over again.

It might sound simple, but the fast-moving water makes the experience more exciting than you might expect.

Surrounded by greenery and natural river pools, Lubuk Minturun is a great place to enjoy a few hours outdoors without spending much money.

Discover Lubuk Minturun

Lubuk Minturun is a green suburban area in Koto Tangah District, about 10 kilometres north of Padang city centre.

It is known for its natural river pools, shady surroundings, and cool atmosphere away from the busy streets of the city.

The area sits along the Batang Kandis River and has long been a popular place for locals to swim, relax, and enjoy the water.

One of its historic bathing areas dates back to 8 April 1883, a date recorded on a Dutch colonial-era monument.

The journey to Lubuk Minturun is also worth enjoying.

Along the roadside, you will find local plant nurseries selling ornamental flowers, fruit trees, and seedlings.

It is a pleasant reminder of the area’s connection to nature and local gardening.

Although some visitors come for the scenery and natural pools, others visit for something much simpler: tubing down the river with friends and family.

How to Get to Lubuk Minturun

The easiest way to reach Lubuk Minturun is by car or motorbike.

From central Padang, head north towards the Lubuk Minturun area.

You can use Google Maps to navigate directly to the riverside cafés and swimming areas.

If you do not have your own transport, you can order a Gojek ride from your location in Padang.

Renting a motorbike for around IDR 100,000 per day is another option if you want the freedom to explore more of the area.

We visited with our driver. After crossing the bridge, we turned left and stopped at the second riverside café on the left.

There was free parking, which made the visit even more convenient.

There are several riverside spots in the area, so look for a café where you can rent a tube and sit beside the water.

Tubing Down the River

When we arrived, the river was flowing strongly, and the sound of rushing water made the place feel refreshing.

The café owner had created a shallow pool for children using rocks as a barrier.

This section had calmer water than the main river, giving families a separate place to play.

For our tubing adventure, we rented an inner tube for just IDR 5,000 per person.

The best part was that there was no time limit.

We could use the tube for as long as we wanted, making it excellent value for money.

We carried our tubes upstream, climbed onto them, and let the current take us back down.

Then we got out, walked upstream again, and repeated the ride.

I expected a gentle float, but the current was much faster than I had imagined.

On my first attempt, I was given a tube that was too small for me. Before I knew it, I had flipped upside down!

It was a funny experience, but it also taught me an important lesson.

Make sure you choose a tube that is suitable for your body size and weight before getting into the water.

The activity is simple, but the combination of rushing water, unexpected turns, and the occasional tumble makes it a lot of fun.

You can easily spend hours going up and down the river without getting bored.

If you are visiting with friends, it is an enjoyable way to spend the afternoon.

Just remember that this is a natural river, not a controlled water attraction, so the current and water conditions can change.

Enjoying Food and Drinks by the River

After several trips down the river, we were ready for something to eat.

We chose a table with an umbrella, wooden chairs, and a wooden table beside the water.

There was no minimum spend to use the seating area, which was great because we could relax by the river without having to order a full meal.

Luckily, we had brought nasi bungkus, a takeaway meal commonly found in West Sumatra.

Ours was a packet of Nasi Padang wrapped in paper and banana leave, with rice, rendang, fried chicken, vegetables, curry sauce, and chilli.

It was exactly what we needed after all that activity.

We asked the café owner if we could eat our outside food at the table, and they were happy for us to do so.

We still supported the café by ordering coffee and some deep-fried snacks.

The prices were very affordable. A cup of coffee cost just IDR 5,000, while fried tofu and banana fritters cost IDR 2,000 each.

Eating beside the river made the experience even better.

We could enjoy our food, listen to the rushing water, and relax under the shade before heading back into the city.

If you are planning a visit, bringing your own food may be a good option, but ask the café staff first.

You can also order drinks and snacks locally without spending much.

Safety Tips for River Tubing

Although basianyuik is cheap and fun, it is important to remember that you are playing in a natural river.

The current can be strong, and the conditions may not always be safe.

1. Wear river shoes.

Rocks in the river can be slippery, sharp, or uneven.

River shoes help protect your feet when walking upstream and getting in and out of the water.

2. Choose the right tube.

Make sure the inner tube is large enough for your body size and weight.

A tube that is too small can make it easier to lose your balance and fall into the water.

3. Keep your feet pointing downstream.

If you decide to go tubing, follow local safety advice and keep your feet in front of you rather than travelling headfirst.

This can help you see what is ahead and protect your head from obstacles.

However, this does not eliminate the risks of strong currents, rocks, or submerged hazards.

4. Be careful of the current.

The water may look inviting, but parts of the river can flow quickly.

Do not enter the main current if you are not a confident swimmer or if local conditions are unsafe.

Never assume an inner tube is a life-saving device, and supervise children closely.

5. Check the weather before visiting.

Heavy rain upstream can cause the river to rise suddenly, even when the weather looks fine where you are standing.

Flash floods can be extremely dangerous.

If rain is forecast, the water is rising or becoming muddy, or local people advise against entering the river, stay out and move to higher ground.

Do not rely on clear skies alone to judge whether the river is safe.

Most importantly, follow the advice of the local café owners and people who know the river.

If conditions look dangerous, skip the tubing and enjoy the area from a safe spot instead.

Payment and Facilities

Bring cash or make sure you can pay using QRIS.

The café we visited accepted both, but there was no debit or credit card machine.

With tube rental costing only IDR 5,000, coffee at IDR 5,000, and fried snacks at IDR 2,000 each, it is easy to enjoy a few hours here without spending much.

Facilities and prices may vary between riverside cafés, so check with the staff when you arrive.

Is Lubuk Minturun Worth Visiting?

Absolutely, if you enjoy simple outdoor activities and want to experience a local side of Padang without spending much money.

Basianyuik is not a fancy tourist attraction.

There are no expensive tickets or complicated activities to book.

You simply rent a tube, walk upstream, and let the river carry you back down.

Add some affordable local snacks, a cup of coffee, and a shaded table beside the water, and you have the ingredients for a relaxing day out.

For just IDR 5,000 per tube, you can repeat the ride as many times as you like, provided the river conditions are safe.

It is an affordable way to cool off, have a laugh with friends, and enjoy the natural surroundings of Lubuk Minturun.

If you are visiting Padang and want to try something different from the usual sightseeing spots, put basianyuik on your list.

Just bring river shoes, check the weather carefully, and remember that safety should always come before another ride down the river.
